Father, All Things Are Possible Unto Thee

2021 · Acrylic on Canvas · 24 × 48 in

In this most crucial and significant moment for humankind, on His last night in mortality, the Savior of the world mercifully and selflessly submitted to the will of the Father to atone for our sins, sorrows, and afflictions. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). This sacred scene has become very meaningful and personal to me. I am amazed and humbled by His love and sacrifice for me and all people. With open arms He invites each of us to come follow Him.

Like many others, I consider one of history’s most significant events to have happened over 200 years ago, when a 14-year-old boy named Joseph Smith entered a grove of trees in upstate New York to pray in 1820. In answer to his sincere prayer, God, Our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and initiated the beginning of the Restoration of the fullness of Christ’s gospel and church. This painting commemorates the moment when the Father called Joseph by name and said, pointing to the Savior, “This is my Beloved Son. Hear Him!” May we all strive to hear Him each day.

I Ascend Unto My Father

Ever our perfect Exemplar, Our Savior has marked the path for us to follow so that we, through Him, can also ascend to return to the presence of our loving Heavenly Father. When we regularly give our time to and look to God and follow His Son, His light will break through any dark, ominous clouds that may exist in our lives and help us gaze heavenward.

I Know My Sheep

In order for us to know anyone, we must be willing to spend adequate time with them. No one knows us better than our Savior, and He is always reaching out and waiting for us to make the effort to come to better know Him. I intentionally tried to convey a sense that Jesus is there to stay with the lamb. You’ll notice that He is sitting on the ground crossed-legged, and that He has removed His outer garments and has set it on the ground beside Him — He doesn’t have somewhere else He needs to be. Finding and ministering to this particular sheep is His entire purpose. I am grateful for His limitless power and capacity to be there for us when we feel alone or forgotten.

Arise and Come Forth Unto Me

2023 · Acrylic on Canvas · 30 × 60 in

The process of painting this piece gave me many sacred moments as I attempted to capture and convey the emotion that those present in this moment must have felt to see their resurrected Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is kind and gentle in His invitations to come to Him. Just as He did to them, Jesus lovingly invites us to continually come to Him one by one. There is intentional visual symbolism embedded as well, particularly in the circular portion of the window around the sun, which is divided into twelve sections to represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The sun’s rays extend downward to the Savior because He, as the Light of the World and the Good Shepherd, lovingly gathers scattered Israel, bringing us, His sheep, into one fold.
